To curb the menace of "holiday brides" and bring down the rising incidences of abuse in NRI marriages, the Centre has asked registrars in states to record passport details of both the spouses. Registrations of NRI marriages are compulsory and must be made with a week of marriage.

A meeting with registrars from states was held with the Expert Committee on NRI Marriages where the collation of data emerged as a key issue. The Women and Child Development Ministry earlier announced the National Commission of Women (NCW) as the nodal agency to collect data, and a portal is also on the anvil.

The committee earlier decided to document only Aadhaar details of spouses in the registration of NRI marriages. In the meeting, it was decided that Punjab's model of registration of marriages will be emulated across states. In the marriage registration form, the Punjab government asks for either Aadhaar data, or collects biometrics data to make one, and further asks for a declaration from both spouses on certain counts.

According to NCW, which has been dealing with NRI marriages, more than 1,300 cases of abandonment were registered by the its NRI cell between 2005 and 2012.
