Centre notifies appointment of 4 new Supreme Court judges, strength now 34

The Centre on Wednesday notified the appointment of four new judges to Supreme Court. Justices V Ramasubramanian, Krishna Murari, S Ravindra Bhat and Hrishikesh Roy are likely to take oath on Monday. 

In separate notifications, the Ministry of Law and Justice announced the appointment of new judges. 

After the appointment of new judges, the Supreme Court will have 33 judges besides the Chief Justice of India. The Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill was passed by Parliament last month and President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent soon after. 

After the law came into force, the Supreme Court on August 28 collegium recommended the names of four High Court Chief Justices for elevation to Supreme Court.

Here is what we know about four new Supreme Court Justices:

Justice V Ramasubramanian

The Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court, Justice Ramasubramanian was born on June 30, 1958. After graduating in Law from the Madras Law College, he enrolled as a Member of the Bar on February 16, 1983. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Madras High Court on July 31, 2006 and as a permanent Judge on November 9, 2009. He was transferred on his own request to the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad for the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh with effect from April 27, 2016. 

After the bifurcation and the creation of a separate High Court for Andhra Pradesh, he was retained as a Judge of the High Court of Telangana at Hyderabad from January 1, 2019. He was sworn in as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court on June 22, 2019.

Justice Krishna Murari

Chief Justice of the Punjab & Haryana High Court, Justice Krishna Murari was born on July 9, 1958. He obtained LLB degree from Allahabad University and enrolled as an Advocate on December 23, 1981. 

He practised in the Allahabad High Court for over 22 years has specialised in Civil Revenue and Service cases. 

appointed as an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court on January 7, 2004 and appointed as Permanent Judge of the Allahabad High Court on August 18, 2005. He took over as Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court, Chandigarh on June 2, 2018.

Justice S Ravindra Bhat

Currently the Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court, Justice Ravindra Bhat was born on October 10, 1958. He was appointed an Additional Judge of Delhi High Court in 2004 and was made a permanent judge in 2006. He took over as Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court on May 5 this year. 

Justice Hrishikesh Roy

Currently the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, Justice Hrishikesh Roy was born on February 1, 1960. He obtained his LLB Degree from Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi in 1982. 

He was sworn-in as an Additional Judge of Gauhati High Court on October 12, 2006 and was appointed permanent Judge with effect from July 15, 2008.

Justice Roy was transferred to Kerala High Court on May 19, 2018 and was serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court since May 30, 2018 before being appointed as the Chief Justice in August.
