For speedy development of the horticulture sector in the country, especially in the Northeastern states, the Union Agriculture Ministry will handover an interim report on a suitability study of some hill sites by January 2018, for immediate implementation.

The study, under the Coordinated Horticulture Assessment and Management using geoinformatics (CHAMAN) programme, was launched by the Modi regime where remote sensing technology is used for strategic development of the horticulture sector, and is likely to be completed by March 2018.

Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh said that CHAMAN was a "pioneer project" in which remote sensing technique was being used for "strategic development" of the horticulture sector to increase farmers' income. "It gives methodology for preparing reliable estimates of horticulture crops."

The proposed development strategy would enable farmers to grow selected crops in highly suitable areas identified under CHAMAN under Jhum (slash-and-burn) and waste lands. "Besides this, the post-harvest damages of farmers will be significantly reduced by creation of infrastructure such as cold storages etc."

In addition, Geo-Spatial Studies such as crop-intensification, orchard rejuvenation and aqua-horticulture will further help farmers to grow horticultural crops in a profitable manner and double their income.

India is the second largest producer of Vegetables and Fruits in the world and is the first in the production of banana, mango, lime and lemon, papaya and okra.

According to the ministry, the wasteland or jhum land areas have been identified for one crop in a district in each of the Northeastern states under site suitability studies. On completion of this project, geo-spatial studies will be conducted in all states.

Singh said that the methodology developed for seven important horticulture crops will be made operational across the country.
