Centre distances itself from Maneka Gandhi's comments on sex determination

Maneka Gandhi had said on Monday women should be compulsorily told that whether they are expecting a boy or a girl and it should be registered to be able to check whether they have given the births or not.

A day after Union Minister Maneka Gandhi suggested that sex determination test should be made compulsory to track women pregnant with a girl child, Health Minister J P Nadda on Tuesday said that it is not a Cabinet's decision.

"This is her own view and not a Cabinet decision so I do not want to discuss anything about it here, Nadda said at the All India Regional Editors Conference.

Gandhi had said on Monday women should be compulsorily told that whether they are expecting a boy or a girl and it should be registered to be able to check whether they have given the births or not.

"I am just putting out this idea. It is being discussed though there is no conclusion yet," Gandhi said at the Conference.

Nadda also held discussions with Rajasthan health minister Rajendra Rathore and senior health department officials on preparedness to tackle Swine flu in the state.

"Discussed preparations to tackle H1N1 Influenza in Rajasthan with state Health Minister and senior state govt officials," Nadda said in a series of tweets.

According to reports, the disease has claimed the lives of five persons died while around 40 have been tested positive for the H1N1 virus since January 1. A rise in temperature in winters was cited as the reason behind the H1N1 virus spread in the state In another session, Union Minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot said various policies and legislations have been reviewed and time-bound action plans drafted to fast track socio-economic development and empowerment of SCs, OBCs, Persons with Disabilities and other vulnerable sections of society.

Gehlot said that welfare of SC students has been given high priority and scholarships for SC students at different levels have been enhanced. He also said that rehabilitation of manual scavengers is being monitored and speedy results ensured.
