Centre declares names of 112 Padma awardees

Announcement by the Home Ministry comes on the eve of Republic Day

A day ahead of 70th Republic Day, the Centre on Friday evening announced a list of 112 recipients of this year's Padma Awards — one of the highest civilian Awards of the country in three categories; namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.

The awardees included veteran journalist Kuldip Nayar (posthumous), cricketer Gautam Gambhir, choreographer Prabhu Deva, actor Kader Khan (posthumous), former foreign secretary S Jaishankar, and former bureaucrat VK Shunglu.

The Padma Vibhushan, awarded for exceptional and distinguished service, has been conferred on Teejan Bai, art-vocals-folk artist from Chhattisgarh; Ismail Omar Guelleh, Djibouti President, for public affairs; Anilkumar Manibhai Naik from Maharashtra for trade and industry; and Balwant Moreshwar Purandare a theatre artist from Maharashtra.

The Padma Bhushan awardees for distinguished service of high order included John Chambers from USA; Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, politician; Pravin Gordhan from South Africa; Mahashay Dharam Pal Gulati, an industrialist from Delhi; Darshan Lal Jain from Haryana for social work; Ashok Laxmanrao Kukade from Maharashtra for medicine; Kariya Munda from Jharkhand for public affairs; Budhaditya Mukherjee, a sitar artist from West Bengal; Mohanlal Viswanathan Nair, Malayalam film star from Kerala; scientist Nambi Narayan; deceased journalist and writer Kuldip Nayar; sportsperson Bachendri Pal; bureaucrat VK Shunglu; and BJP MP Hukumdev Narayan Yadav who represents Madhubani constituency of Bihar.

The Padma Shri given for distinguished service in different fields has been given to 94 personalities. Notables from Maharashtra included deceased cine actor Kader Khan; theatre artist Dinyar Contractor; Sudam Kate for research in medicine of Sickle Cell disease; actor Aman Kendre; Ravindra Kolhe and Smita Kolhe for medicine and affordable healthcare; Shankar Mahadevan for contribution to music; Nagindas Sanghavi for literature and journalism.

Prominent Names
