Hurriyat Conference calls Jammu & Kashmir CM Mufti's comments as a 'political gimmick'
"As far as Hurriyat Conference is concerned, its entire leadership along with the hundreds of activists and associates were arrested some 45 days before the election drama and they were either jailed or placed under house arrest ... they were denied any chance to reach out to the people and present their stand. Ruling PDP in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday demanded from the NDA government the return of the mortal remains of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, a day after assuming power in alliance with BJP. Eight PDP MLAs issued a statement in this regard saying the party "promises to follow vigorously" for the return of the mortal remains. Guru was hanged on February 9, 2013 inside Tihar Jail. Media making mountain of a molehill; I stand by my comments: Mufti Sayeed
Post his controversial statement, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has accused the media of not focussing on his positive comments and just making a mountain of a molehill. "I also talked about the kind of democratic rights and freedom that Jammu and Kashmir has within the Constitution of India," said Sayeed, adding that he would stand by what he said.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Rajnath Singh stated in the Lok Sabha that the credit for smooth conduct of the Jammu and Kashmir elections goes to the Election Commission, Army, Paramilitary forces and people of the state. Singh said that the Centre and the BJP completely dissociates with Sayeed's statement.
"Our government and BJP fully dissociates with the statement of Jammu and Kashmir CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeed crediting Pakistan, Hurriyat for smooth conduct of assembly polls. I am making this statement after discussion with and consent of the Prime Minister." Rajnath said in Lok Sabha.
"The credit for smooth polls in Jammu and Kashmir goes to the Election Commission, Army, Paramilitary forces and people of the state. The Prime Minister had no discussion with Mufti on giving credit of successful completion of Jammu and Kashmir polls," he said.
During Zero Hour, an angry Opposition also demanded a resolution to be adopted by the House condemning the statement of Sayeed at a press conference in Jammu on Sunday, soon after he took oath of office and secrecy.
The opposition then staged a walk out from the Parliament over the issue.
Raising the issue, KC Venugopal (Cong) said "this is a serious issue" as he quoted Sayeed as saying that he had also had a word with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard. He said Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh of BJP was sitting next to the Chief Minister, but had given no clarification.
Venugopal said militants killed six village sarpanchs and mounted suicide attacks on Army units. "This cannot be called creating a conducive atmosphere," he said, adding that the credit for smooth conduct of elections should be given to the people of the state, the Election Commission and security personnel. "The Prime Minister's silence is shocking...the House should condemn it. We should pass a resolution," he said.
The opposition was on its feet demanding a statement by the Prime Minister.
Leader of Congress Mallikarjun Kharge said since the Prime Minister was told by Sayeed that he feels that the credit should go to Hurriyat, militants and Pakistan for smooth conduct of J and K assembly polls, Modi should make a statement. "Only PM can explain," he said.
Meanwhile, former separatist leader and newly inducted Jammu and Kashmir minister Sajjad Lone chose to downplay the statement. "All the focus is going to be on development. Only one day has passed, let us focus on hope, not hopelessness," he said.
On Sunday, Sayeed took oath as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir for the second time in his political career.
