Central relief to farm sector likely soon

The Central government is readying a massive farm relief package to claw back support among the agriculture class in the run-up to 2019 elections. Sources in the government suggest the package may be announced before the end of the Winter Session of the Parliament.

After the BJP lost the Hindi heartland states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, the Modi government is exploring all options to reach out to the farmers who will play a major role in delivering the 2019 mandate.

Sources say the government is not looking at the populist farm loan waiver route adding it is exploring ways to overhaul the existing welfare schemes apart from announcing new measures.

The Centre is planning to pay farmers the differential price between their Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their produce and the market rate, sources said adding the Centre is exploring options of giving direct subsidy to farmers and increasing the credit limit under Kisan Credit Card schemes. The government is also pushing banks for conversion of  Kisan Credit Cards into RuPay ATM-cum-Debit Kisan Credit Cards for ease of fund flow to farmers.

The government is working towards doubling the famers’ income by 2022, which will mark the 75th anniversary of Independence, a promise made by PM Modi.

Modi, on Wednesday, met FM Arun Jaitley, BJP president Amit Shah and Union Agri Minister Radha Mohan Singh and discussed the wide-ranging farm relief plan.

The Action Plan

Modi govt is planning to pay farmers the differential MSF (for produce and market rate). Also, direct subsidy and hike in credit limit under Kisan Credit Card schemes. It’s also pushing banks for reforms in these schemes to ease fund flow to the farmers.
