Central Railway makes history, adds 100 coaches to 50 trains in a year

In what Central Railway (CR) claims is the biggest addition to trains anywhere in India over a single year, it has managed to augment 50 trains with two coaches each - making it a total of 100 coaches - on a permanent basis in the past one year. Apart from the increased number of seats for passengers, it is raking in Rs 1.19 crores extra in ticket revenues daily, a CR statement said.

The 100 coaches in 50 trains feat is a huge increase from the 34 coaches that were augmented in 19 trains between April 2103 and March 2014. It is also higher than the 81 coaches that got augmented in 27 trains in 2013-13.

"These coaches are in trains that run on the heavily-patronised Howrah, Varanasi, Lucknow, Patna, Gorakhpur, Nagpur sectors. It gives the passenger almost 100 extra seats in each train on a daily basis. That is a fairly good number," said a CR official.

They include 20 trains with an extra 47 coaches including 18 AC ones towards Howrah, Lucknow, Varanasi, Patna, Gorakhpur, Allahabad, Puri, Sultanpur, Azamgarh, five trains with 14 coaches including six AC towards Agra, Amritsar, Habibganj, Haridwar and 12 trains with 16 coaches including 13 AC towards Nagpur, Aurangabad, Madgaon, Karmali, Sawantwadi Road, Gondia, Kolhapur, Solapur, Pandharpur.
