Convenor of a central committee on animal safety visited temporary markets in Kolkata where cows are being sold for sacrifice during Bakra Eid. They will submit a report to the Central and state governments and meet officials to discuss this issue.

Talking to DNA, Dr SK Mittal, convenor of the six-member National Inspection Committee to check illegal transportation, slaughter and sacrifice of animals said that after talking to administrative authorities of three bordering states of West Bengal – Bihar, Odisha and Jharkhand, two members of the committee, including him, had come over to Bengal to take stock of the ground reality.

“We visited several places in Kolkata and will visit other parts of the state in the following two days. On Thursday we started off with places like Ekbalpur, Kidderpore and Bhukailash. Temporary markets had come up at these places and were selling cows illegally in an unhygienic manner and flouting all rules,” he said.

He said that he wanted to get a first-hand knowledge about how the situation was before he conducted a meeting with higher authorities. “We have requested for an appointment with the Chief Secretary of the state. Before we visited these places we had to remove the ‘government of India’ board from our vehicles in order to avoid getting attacked,” he added.

He also said that he had taken still pictures and videos of the markets and would attach those with the reports he would file to the Centre and state governments, as digital evidences.

“We will be going to Kharagpur next which is one of the routes from where animals are brought into the state for sacrificing,” he said.
