Central govt docs to retire at 65 years: Cabinet

In a move that will benefit over thousand doctors, the Union Cabinet has extended the service of doctors serving in various central departments to 65 years.

In order to mitigate the acute crunch of doctors across the country, the cabinet has sanctioned the extension of superannuation of doctors.

These doctors belong to Indian Railways Medical Service. The cabinet will also enhance superannuation age for doctors working in Central Universities and Indian Institutes of Technologies (IITs) as well as doctors in major port trusts under the Ministry of Shipping.

"The decision would help in better patient care, proper academic activities in Medical colleges, and also in effective implementation of National Health Programmes for delivery of health care services," a press statement stated.

The age of superannuation of doctors of Central Health Service was earlier extended to 65 years in May 31, 2016.

The latest cabinet decision comes with a view to bring about parity between doctors serving in various cadres.

The decision will benefit around 1,445 doctors of various ministries and departments of the Central Government would be benefitted.
