The arrival of special director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Rakesh Asthana to Kolkata to take stock of the progress in the probe into the Saradha, Narada and Rose Valley has raised many questions.

After an initial round of meeting with senior supervising officers of the cases, Asthana would meet investigating officers of the three scams, on Wednesday. The questions that are being raised is whether he would only take an account of the situation or give out instructions to officers as well. Many believe that the progress of the investigation of the Central agency depends upon the relationship between West Bengal state government and the Centre. Of late, the ice between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has started melting. Mamata had participated in two important meetings chaired by Modi.

Political analysts said that at a time when Mamata was trying to anchor the unity of all Opposition parties against BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the arrival of Asthana carry a lot of significance. They believe that the Centre is trying to rake up these investigation process to send a veiled threat to Mamata and her party.

Leaders of the ruling TMC, however, have termed it all as planned attempt to taint the image of West Bengal state government. TMC national secretary general Partha Chatterjee had said on Monday that the arrival of Asthana was an electoral tactic of the Centre. “The Central government tries to put pressure ahead of all elections but it will not help. Mamata Banerjee’s fight against communal forces and to remove BJP from power will continue.

BJP state president Dilip Ghosh, on the other hand, said, “A jaundiced eye sees a yellow world. We had asked for punishment for offenders irrespective of their political affiliation.”
