A team of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials on Saturday visited the state-run shelter home in Muzaffarpur, to probe the alleged rape and torture of at least 34 girls at the facility.

According to a source, "Senior officials from Patna were a part of the team and they went inside the shelter home and searched the rooms and offices for evidence related to the case. Local cops also assisted them in the probe."

The 'Balika Grih' was sealed by the police after the scandal came to light earlier in May this year. A social audit report by Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) had revealed that the residents of the facility were physically, mentally and sexually abused and some of them had to even undergo abortion, following which the government of Bihar had sprung into action and lodged a case in the matter. The case was later transferred to the CBI.

The source added that CBI teams also conducted simultaneous searches at several places in Muzaffarpur to find the whereabouts of Madhu Kumar, believed to be a close aide of Brajesh Thakur, the main accused in the case who was the owner of the NGO Sewa Sankalp Evam Vikas Samiti, which ran the institution. Thakur is presently behind the bars along with others.

Among the areas in Muzaffarpur which were searched by the CBI team were Amar Cinema road, Red light area, Purani Gudari road and Maharaji Pokhar. They also visited the Swadhar Grih, a short-stay home for women which was also run by an NGO of Brajesh Thakur. The Swadhar home was found locked and no officials or residents were found there when a probe team had visited it in June this year.

Saturday's raids came after interrogation of Rosy Rani and three others, who were arrested by the CBI earlier this week. A Patna Court has forwarded them to CBI remand till Monday.

The source said the CBI has also filed a plea to attach the property of Shiba Kumar, wife of arrested child protection officer Ravi Roshan, as she was on the run. The court had directed for action against Kumar for making the identity of some of the victim girls public on Facebook.
