Enforcement Directorate's chief investigating officer for the 2G case, Rajeshwar Singh, who has been at the centre of the controversy the CBI has been embroiled in, now finds his leave cancelled without reason. The central government has asked Rajeshwar to report to service, though he had secured leave last month in order to pursue a masters in law degree.

CBI special director Rakesh Asthana had, in a communication to the Cabinet Secretary on October 24, said Rajeshwar, along with CBI director Alok Verma, was trying to tarnish his image. Rajeshwar is also part of the investigation following accusations against Finance Secretary Hasmukh Adhia a few months ago. His leave was sanctioned by then ED director Karnal Singh, who retired on October 27. IRS officer Sanjay Kumar Mishra, meanwhile, was subsequently appointed the new ED chief. While the ED director is the competent authority to sanction leave, the sanction order has been overturned and no reasons have been cited.

According to the leave sanction order, Rajeshwar had to be available when required for "assistance in investigation or trial in court" with regards to cases probed by him, including the 2G spectrum scam and the Aircel-Maxis money laundering case.

The Union finance ministry, meanwhile, submitted a secret report to the Supreme Court in June, apparently containing details of a phone call Rajeshwar received from Dubai. The report is said to have been prepared by the external intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), and handed over to the DoR.

Karnal Singh had issued a press statement, saying the call received by Rajeshwar pertained to an "ongoing investigation", and that he was a responsible officer with outstanding career records.

WHO IS RAJESHWAR

Rajeshwar Singh, ED’s chief investigating officer, was probing the 2G case, but was accused by CBI special director Rakesh Asthana of trying to tarnish his image along with director Alok Verma.
