CBI probing bribery allegations against European company

Acting on an input from Serious Fraud Office of the United Kingdom, CBI is looking into alleged pay-offs of nearly three million pounds made by an European company to an Indian for allegedly swinging a government deal in its favour.

Acting on an input from Serious Fraud Office of the United Kingdom, CBI is looking into alleged pay-offs of nearly three million pounds made by an European company to an Indian for allegedly swinging a government deal in its favour.

Highly placed CBI sources said they have received a reference from SFO, UK, with regard to a probe by them against an European company, which deals with infrastructure, energy and transport, in which it has emerged that the company had allegedly roped in a bogus consultant to swing a governemnt deal.

The sources have clarified the probe involved allegations of bribery by the company to some private individuals and not to governement officials.

When contacted, CBI Director Ranjit Sinha said confirmed the receipt of the letter.

"We have received a letter from SFO, UK. We are looking into the allegations," he said.

Asked to comment on the development, CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad said a letter from SFO UK has been received in which it has only asked for the antecedants of a private individual from CBI.
