The CBI opposed on Thursday the bail plea of Ryan International School bus conductor Ashok Kumar, who was arrested for Class II student Pradyuman Thakur's murder on the Gurugram campus in September. The move comes as a surprise because the agency has apprehended a 16-year-old student of the same school and initially indicated that there was no evidence against Kumar arrested by the Gurugram police.

The victim's father, Barun Thakur, also opposed Kumar's bail plea, saying the CBI has not given a clean chit to him. It was Barun who had demanded a CBI probe into his seven-year-old son's murder case, saying Kumar was innocent. The CBI took over on September 22.

The CBI counsel argued before the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Rajni Yadav that the investigation in the case was at a sensitive stage and a clean chit was not given to anyone. The agency also told the court that the Gurugram police tortured Kumar and a key witness to give favourable statements. The court fixed November 20 as the next date of hearing in the matter.

Kumar's counsel Mohit Verma had moved his bail application two days after the CBI apprehended the Class XI student on November 8.

The court also saw CCTV footage of the crime scene in which the 16-year-old student was seen going towards the washroom in which Pradyuman's was killed on September 8. He had been found with his throat slit outside the toilet.

The juvenile is weak in studies and committed the crime to have school exams and a parent-teacher meeting postponed, CBI sources had said earlier. Teachers had noticed the suspect — reportedly under psychiatric evaluation over anger issues — bringing a knife to school four days before the murder, but the Gurugram police did not give any importance to this crucial bit of information, CBI sources had said. He confessed to his crime, in front of his father and an independent witness, the agency then told a juvenile court.
