CBI nets 14 in special drive against disproportionate assets cases

The amount involved is said to be Rs 38.47 crore but the agency said the sum is likely to increase as its investigators continue to scrutinise the accounts of the government officials.

The Central Bureau of Investigation cracked its whip against more than a dozen government officials for allegedly amassing wealth through illegal means. The agency registered a total of 14 disproportionate assets (DA) case against 16 persons, including 14 government officials, as part of a 'special drive'. 

The agency said that the special drive was conducted from May 16 to May 31 after sleuths had received intelligence about several public servants engaging in amassing wealth and misusing their official position. The total amount of the money involved is said to be Rs 38.47 crore but the agency said the sum is likely to increase as its investigators continue to scrutinise the accounts of the government officials.

Among the accused are six group A level officials, three belong to group B and five to group C. Two others accused in the DA cases are family members of some of the accused government officials. A total of 14 DA assets case have been registered by the CBI.

The agency also said that out of the Rs 38.47 crore, close to Rs 25 crore belong to a single accused identified as Ashutosh Kumar Singh a deputy general manager of the Handicrafts and Handloom Export Corporation of India Ltd (Ministry of Textiles). Singh was arrested by the CBI earlier this month on the basis of a complaint which alleged that he had duped someone of Rs one crore for releasing wages and pending arrears of workers at Food Corporation of India.

Singh, a group A government official, allegedly used to pose as a Joint Secretary in the Government of India and conducted most of his activities in Mumbai. He allegedly has 27 properties in several areas including Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Goregaon and Gorakhpur. The alleged illegal activities of Singh took place between April 2008 to April 2016 when he was posted in different ministries. Singh has worked as officer on special duty (OSD) to former MoS Home Affairs Sriprakash Jaiswal OSD to former minister of state (MoS) Labour Munni Lal and PS to former MoS Rural Development and Parliamentary Affairs Suryakant Patil.
