The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) questioned Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar for his alleged role in destroying and tampering evidence in Saradha chit fund scam to save top West Bengal politicians. He was grilled for eight hours and has been directed to join probe on Sunday again as the CBI sleuths remained unconvinced with Kumar's answers.

"He is a senior IPS officer and also a tough person to crack from whom we can extract information. We need more time. We have ample evidence against him," said senior CBI officer adding he has been asked to join on Sunday.

The agency also questioned him about his alleged role in tampering with call detail records of Sudipta Sen was CMD of Saradha Group and his close aide Debjani Mukherjee, a co-accused in the multi-crore deposit collection scam.

"The original CDR is different and what we received is different. It was manipulated," said senior CBI officer adding more than 50 important phone calls before the arrest of Sen from influentials were manipulated intentionally from actual CDR to save some influentials.

The agency has also called former TMC MP Kunal Ghosh for questioning. In his statement before agency earlier, he has named various evidence and minute details of the other accused involved in the scam as well as who all helped them to escape and the law. The agency wants to confront both Kumar and Ghosh. "We want to confront them. We have enough evidence," said Joint Director Pankaj Srivastava.

Kunal Ghosh had given 14 statements before Kumar after and before arrest which were asked to hand over to CBI several times but the state didn't save influential's intentionally.

"Also DBR (daily business records) in pen drives where cash transactions were recorded were also seized from witnesses by state police but most of them were not mentioned in official seizure list. The same thing happened in cash transitions made to influential's were listed in a supdita sens personal diary is also missing," the officer stated.

Kumar arrived at the CBI office in Shillong on Saturday morning for questioning by the probe agency in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam. A CBI team from New Delhi also reached its office in Shillong to probe Kolkata's top cop.

CBI wants to recover crucial evidence that have been with help by Kolkata police, particularly Kumar as he had headed Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the state government to probe the case before being transferred to CBI.

It has alleged that Kumar did not hand over the mobile phones, laptops and a diary to CBI which were seized during the arrest of Sudipta Sen was CMD of Saradha Group. He was asked to submit it several times but the agency request was ignored.

The agency had summoned Kumar for questioning on February 9 following SC direction to join the probe. On February 5, the Supreme Court had directed the 1989-batch IPS officer to appear before the agency in the scam. The apex Court had said that no coercive step should be taken against Kumar, who will now appear before the probe agency in Shillong in Meghalaya.
