The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has yet again charged one of its own officers, accusing its deputy legal adviser Beena Raizada with forgery, saying she forged the signature of one of her superiors to secure a promotion. It's been alleged that the accuser forged the signature of the senior in the performance report.
The case comes at a time when the CBI's top two officers — director Alok Verma and special director Rakesh Asthana — are fighting legal battles in court, accusing each other of alleged corruption.
The agency has filed an FIR against Raizada, posted with the anti-corruption Unit IV and is probing the Vyapam scam, for forging the signature of the head of branch to show favourable assessment reports in her promotion.
Raizada has been booked by her own agency under sections of cheating, forgery and using forged documents as genuine, and fraudulently committing mischief. She was posted at the agency's Patna zone when the assessment reports were allegedly forged between 2014 and 2017. She forged the signatures of the head of branch, VK Singh, who was posted as Patna DIG. Singh is currently the IG in Jaipur.
The agency learnt about the forgery during an internal inquiry. They found interpolations in the assessment notes by Raizada and subsequently registered a case. Her senior VK Singh, whose signatures were forged, claimed before the inquiry officer that signatures on the notes resembled his but he didn't sign the documents.
The FIR said, "During inquiry, VK Singh said that the signature on the assessment notes resembled his signature, but he hadn't signed those documents. He further said that Raizada was not on duty for a 90-day period, in 2014 and 2015, and therefore, there was no question of writing an assessment report in her favour."
Furthermore, the officer also said that there was no question of writing an assessment report in her favour in 2016, since he was repatriated to the parent department in 2015. The agency has further claimed that Raizada submitted three assessment reports between 2014 and 2017.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court on Tuesday dismissed the bail plea of middleman Manoj Prasad in a bribery case allegedly involving CBI special director Rakesh Asthana.
Justice Najmi Waziri denied relief to Prasad, saying the allegations against him were serious in nature and noted the CBI submission that the investigation is at a crucial stage.
