The Income Tax (I-T) department has found instances where there have been issues of linking Aadhaar number with the PAN card because of mismatch in information .

From July 1, it was made mandatory for individuals to link permanent account number (PAN) with their existing Aadhaar number for filing income tax returns.

For speedy rectification of the issues in linking the two, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has written a letter to UIDAI, the agency that manages Aadhaar, asking them to resolve the matter as the deadline for filing I-T returns is near — July 31, according to sources.

People have been asked to rectify the information in their Aadhaar card, but it takes two weeks for any name/information change in Aadhaar, which has to be fast tracked if the deadline of July 31 is to be met, sources said.

CBDT Chairman Sushil Chandra wrote a letter to UIDAI Chief Ajay Bhushan Pandey this week on the issue citing concerns raised by individuals who are facing difficulties in linking PAN with their Aadhaar.

Such instances have been found in Delhi-NCR, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and other states.

PAN is mandatory for filing I-T returns as well as opening bank accounts, or any high value financial transaction.

The move to link the two has been aimed at cracking down multiple PANs held by one person. According to available data, about 20.7 million taxpayers have linked their Aadhaar with PAN. There are over 250 million PAN card holders in the country while Aadhaar has been issued to 1.15 billion people.
