Cauvery water row: 22-year-old woman set 42 buses on fire for Rs 100 and a plate of biryani

A 22-year-old woman is suspected to have instigated the violence over the Cauvery row was allegedly offered Rs 100 to join protest, reports Times of India.

C Bhagya was allegedly offered Rs 100 and a plate of biryani to join the violent protest in September 12. According to her mother Yellamma, Bhagya was offered Rs 100 and a plate of mutton biryani to join the violent protests

After watching videos from CCTV footage, the police found Bhagya to be a main provocateur. But police is yet to confirm the same.  

She was also accused of dousing KPN fleet with diesel and threatening to burn them.

Bhagya is the only woman among 400-odd people arrested in the violence. While the footage shows other women engaging in the violence, only Bhagya has been arrested as the extent of their participation is yet to be ascertained.

On the night of Sept 12 after violence erupted with dozens of buses and lorries with Tamil Nadu registration being set on fire as mobs let out their fury over reports of some incidents of attack on Kannadigas and their property in the neighbouring state.
The violence had also erupted within hours after the Supreme Court modified its September 5 order and asked Karnataka to release a reduced quantum of 12,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu till September 20.

In an interim order on September 5, Supreme Court had asked Karnataka to release 15,000 cusecs of Cauvery water daily for next 10 days to Tamil Nadu, leading to protests in parts of Karnataka.

The apex court had also asked Tamil Nadu government to approach the committee to decide on the quantum of Cauvery water to be released to Tamil Nadu and other states after the period of 10 days was over. However, under pressure following the protests, the Karnataka government approached the Supreme Court on September 11 seeking modification of the interim order.

Hearing the plea, the Supreme Court then amended its order, directing the state to release a reduced quantum of 12,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu till September 20.
