In a bizarre incident bringing back sordid memories of the cannibalism reported in the famous Nithari case, a tribal couple along with an accomplice killed their fellow labourer over a petty dispute, gouged out his liver and gorged on it after cooking it at leisure.

Police have arrested one person in this connection and seized some pieces of the cooked liver and sent it for examination.

Police sources said here on Friday that the incident occurred at a brick kiln at Bhoga village in Sonbarsa area of Gorakhpur on Wednesday night. A local laborer Pappu got into a fracas with fellow laborer Janak Lohar, a native of Gumla region of Jharkhand, while gambling. The arrested accused Pawan, who was also present there, told police that the two were fighting over who had won. Janak beat up Pappu who fainted, perhaps due to a head injury.

A bewildered Janak, in a state of panic thinking that he had killed Pappu in a fit of rage, called his wife Radha and asked compatriot laborers Pawan and Sonu to help him dispose of the ‘corpse’. They dumped the body in a nearby field. However, Pawan told police, Janak and Radha cut Pappu’s stomach with a sickle and gouged out his liver which the three of them cooked and ate after Sonu had left.

Three pieces of the cooked liver which were left over were thrown in the nearby field. The police nabbed Pawan after other laborers at the kiln told them that they had last seen Pappu with Pawan and Janak. Pawan confessed to his involvement in the crime and led the police to recover the three pieces of cooked liver and the sickle used in the crime.

Meanwhile, Janak, Radha and Sonu are absconding. A police team has been dispatched to Gumla (Jharkhand) for their arrest.
