The Bombay High Court on Monday suggested all education boards to consider if making Maths as an optional subject was possible to help students obtain graduation degree.

A division bench of Justice VM Kanade and Justice AK Menon said, "We have seen that almost 90 percent of students drop out as they are not able to clear Maths and Language exams. These subjects are not required in degree faculties like Arts. If an option is given to students regarding these subjects, then it will help them complete graduation."
The bench has asked the education boards to take advise from experts and revert by July 26, whether its suggestions can be acted upon.
A reference was made by the court to an earlier system prevalent in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) board, until the year 1975, when Sanskrit language was given as an alternative option to General Maths, to help students clear their exams. "Is it possible for you (SSC) board to revert to the old scheme?"
The court gave the direction while hearing a petition filed by Dr Harish Shetty asking for steps being take to assist students suffering from learning disabilities at school levels.
Earlier, the court had ordered all schools, boards and educational institutions to screen students and see that they carry out the task of detecting specific learning disabilities in children at the very earliest stage, preferably, when they are in primary schools or after they complete the age of nine years.”
The court also asked schools and educational institutions to keep records confidential in case a child is detected with a learning disability.
Moreover, the order says that educational institutions may delegate this task to teachers and other selected persons to do the job of detecting learning disabilities.
