In what comes as a relief for BJP national executive committee member Mukul Roy — named in an FIR in the murder of a TMC MLA from Krishnagunj — was granted protection till March 7 by the Calcutta High Court. He had filed an anticipatory bail plea.

A division bench of Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Manojit Mondal has, however, also ruled that Roy will not be able to enter Nadia district till March 5 when the case will be heard next.

On February 9, TMC MLA Satyajit Biswas was shot dead at point blank range in the Fulbari area where he had gone to inaugurate a Saraswati puja. Roy had been named in the FIR and has been charged with criminal conspiracy.

Two persons have also been arrested so far in the murder case.

Meanwhile, there is controversy over Roy's lawyer CPI(M) leader Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya. "This only goes on to prove the tacit understanding between CPI(M) and BJP which we always talked about," said TMC MLA and state food and supplies minister Jyotipriyo Mullick.

Bhattacharya was not available for a comment, but BJP has defended him, citing the examples of noted lawyers Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Kapil Sibal — senior Congress leaders — who have represented leaders from opposition.

BJP state general secretary Sayantan Basu said, "Bhattacharya is a professional lawyer and defending his client, Roy. Just like Singhvi and Sibal whose party has been alleging that TMC leaders have been involved in several cases of corruption and has defended them in court."
