University of Calcutta Vice Chancellor Suranjan Das, who has been gheraoed by students in the past, on Friday said protesters should not infringe upon the rights of university officials.

"I have a strong-held belief that the students should enjoy their democratic right to register dissent and voice demands relating to issues that directly concern them. But this right must be exercised in a democratic manner without infringing (upon) the democratic and human rights of other sections of the university community," Das told students at the annual convocation.

The success of a democratic system rests on a spirit of dialogue and deliberations and this spirit should never be jeopardised, he said.

"I am sure my students, especially the union functionaries, will appreciate this and cooperate with the administration in resolving issues of university governance," the VC said.

His remarks came in the backdrop of incidents of students gheraoing top functionaries including VC to register their protest over some university-related issues.
