Calcutta High Court orders police to register FIR against Tapas Pal for rape remarks

Calcutta High Court has directs CID to probe TMC MP Tapas Pal's alleged insensitive comment against women, orders lodging of FIR against him. High Court to monitor CID investigation.

Background- TMC leader Tapas Pal  was caught in video threatening women with rape. A video emerged where  the Trinamool Congress (TMC) politician was seen threatening to rape women belonging to the opposition party. The video which was allegedly said to be a few weeks old shows Pal screaming threats of violence at rival party workers at Krishnanagar. In the same speech he was shown threatening to rape women as well. 'If CPM tries to kill and intimidate our workers here, I will not spare them. I will send my boys and get CP?I women raped if necessary."  Pal however denied the allegation and said in a TV interview that he said 'raid' and not 'rape'. 'I never used the word rape, I said raid instead', he said according to reports.

The entire video captured Pal making threats of violence against CPM workers. He even bragged about about being a gunda (thug) and carrying a revolver. 'I move around with a revolver. I will pull the trigger myself. 'I have been a gunda. I have fooled around myself', he was seen yelling at the crowd. Read more

Political reactions-  Initially, TMC supremo, and West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee kept mum over the issue. TMC's Derek 'OBrien had responded to the issue and said that the party absolutely doesn't endorse Pal's statements. Meanwhile West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said, "Where did he say this? I will have to check. If he has said this, then the party does not support such remarks."

Congress' Pradeep Bhattarchary however demanded that Mamata take action. He said, "I cannot believe herself being a woman how Mamata Banerjee can allow a man like Tapas Pal to be in the party. He should be sacked immediately."

Manish Tewari also said that violence has no place in politics and condemned the issue. 

Tapas Pal's remark was a 'slip of tongue; matter should end with his apology, says President's son Abhijit Mukherjee - "Since Tapas Pal has apologised and his party forgave him. The matter should end there". Amidst the row over Tapas Pal's controversial remarks on women, Congress MP Abhijit Mukherjee has said that since the actor and Trinamool Congress MP has apologised the matter should end.

"Since Tapas Pal has apologised and his party forgave him. The matter should end there," Abhijit, the son of President Pranab Mukherjee, told reporters here yesterday when asked about Pal's remarks. 

"Tapas Pal is like a friend. I became his fan after seeing the film 'Dadar Kirti'," he said about Pal, a popular Bengali film actor. "I have seen in newspapers that he has apologised. It is a controversial matter. Such kind of comment should not have been made. It happens due to slip of tongue. More or less we all are guilty of such things." 

Once earlier, Mukherjee, too, had found himself at the center of a controversy following sexist remarks towards women protesting the Delhi gang-rape. He drew much flak for terming the women who participated as "highly dented-painted". Read more

FIR filed against MP Tapas Pal after his rape remark -  An FIR has been filed against Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Tapas Pal for his offensive remarks against women. Pal had told a gathering in Krishnanagar, "I will send my boys to their (attackers) homes and ask them to rape their women. If any of our Trinamool men are touched I will ensure that the CPI (M) is finished and ensure that their homes are burnt off." Read more

Supreme Court moved seeking Central Bureau of Investigation probe against Tapas Pal's remarksA PIL was filed on Friday in the Supreme Court seeking a CBI investigation into the allegedly inflammatory remarks made by actor-cum-Trinamool Congress MP Tapas Pal. The PIL was filed by advocate Bijayan Ghosh seeking a probe by CBI as he alleged that the West Bengal Police were acting in a partisan manner in the matter.
