The Calcutta High Court on Monday asked West Bengal government to take steps to check the rise of illegal syndicates controlling construction work.

Hearing a petition filed by a real estate promoter Md Ismail who alleged that he could not carry on construction work at Maheshtala due to the syndicates, Justice Dipankar Dutta said the situation is alarming and such rackets are there across the state. He observed that no government project, not even of the judiciary, has been left out by the syndicates.

He told the state government lawyer that the administration has to take steps otherwise the situation will go beyond control. The judge also asked the police to file a report on Ismail's complaint within a week.
