Burdwan- Durgapur Lok Sabha constituency profile:

Burdwan- Durgapur Lok Sabha constituency created after delimitation in 2008 has elected Left in 2009 and TMC in 2014. The constituency consisting mainly of two cities of Durgapur and Bardhaman and some of its neighbouring areas is expected to see a close fight between TMC and BJP. Sitting MP Mamtaz Sanghamita is again in the fray but contesting against her is heavyweight BJP candidate Surendra Ahluwalia. Ahluwalia who was Darjeeling MP has been shifted here. However, the veteran leader claims to be at ease here in Durgapur where his wife's family lives. Ahluwalia born in Asansol studied in Burdwan and claims to be conversant about all major local issues. His brother in law is mayor in council in Durgapur municipality.

However, TMC is unlikely to extend any courtesy in the heat and battle of election. Sanghamita is hoping to sail owing to her solid work in Parliament and TMC's robust organisation. But there are several factors that would keep TMC at the edge. Around 12% voters are non-Bengalis and many are Sikhs here, who are likely to support SS Ahluwalia. In the last few years, in neighbouring areas, there have been several low and medium intensity communal clashes. If there is voting along religious lines, then TMC may face some complications.

CPI(M) candidate from Burdwan- Durgapur is Abhas Roy Chowdhuri, who is a former students' leader. Left has a dedicated voter base in this predominantly industrial belt. Congress has fielded Ranajit Mukherjee.  In campaign trail, TMC is attacking Ahluwalia's 'inaction' regarding shutting down of plants, privatisation of alloy-steel plant. PM Modi not mentioning about industry in the campaign trail has also been highlighted by TMC.  The assembly segments under Burdwan-Durgapur are Bardhaman Dakshin, Bardhaman Uttar,Monteswar,Bhatar, Galsi ,Durgapur Purba and Durgapur Paschim. The constituency goes to polls in the fourth phase on 29th April.
