An Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) was injured while the district police chief survived a gunshot, thanks to his bullet-proof jacket, during an encounter with a criminal here, police said today.

Sagar alias Bhim, wanted by the Delhi Police and carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh, has also been injured in the encounter last night and hospitalised, they said.

Bhim had fled when he was being taken to a city court yesterday and police had launched a manhunt following a tip- off that he was present in the area.

"During the checking, when two persons were stopped, they started firing at the police. The police retaliated," said district police chief Ajay Kumar Sahni, who survived the gunshot as he was wearing a bullet-proof jacket.

Later, the state police said in a statement today, "A bullet hit the upper portion of the jacket of the SSP (Sahni), while another hit the hand of Additional SP (rural) NP Singh." Bhim has suffered injuries in legs and has been arrested.

A motorcycle, 9 mm pistol and three live cartridges have been also been recovered from him.

"The injured additional SP has been admitted to a private hospital, where he is said to be out of danger," the police said, adding the Bhim has been referred to a hospital trauma centre in Varanasi.
