In a bizarre incident, a Delhi Police Head Constable shot himself and the bullet pierced through his skull injuring another cop who was rushing to save him.

While Constable Rajesh, who was hit with the bullet in his shoulder, is undergoing treatment, the police are trying to ascertain the reason behind Head Constable Harbhagwan Singh's suicide.

The incident took place during the early hours on Friday when Singh, a native of Bhatinda in Punjab, who had been posted at Shahbad Dairy Police Station for the past four years, visited a house nearby with one of his colleagues.

The incident took place near the Shabad Dairy police station in Rohini.

"The primary probe has revealed that finding a secluded corner, Singh pulled out his service pistol and rested it on his lower jaw under the chin, when his colleague saw him," said a senior police officer.

"However, before the colleague could shout, call for help or even dive on Singh to stop him from pulling the trigger, he shot himself. The bullet, that pierced through his head, hit his colleague's shoulder injuring him," the officer said.

As both lay unmoved, locals and other cops from the police station rushed to the spot and found the duo lying in a pool of blood. While Singh was motionless, Rajesh who was alive was rushed to a hospital where he was admitted for treatment.

Rishipal, Deputy Commissioner of Police, did not respond to calls made by DNA.

The deceased is survived by a 17-year-old son, two daughters and wife, who live in Rohini's Avantika area.

"A crime and forensics team was rushed to the spot. The statement of the injured cop has been recorded and we are looking into the matter. The CCTV cameras from nearby areas are also being scanned to establish the sequence of incidents and the family along with other colleagues of the deceased are being examined to know more. The policeman who was injured is also being examined," the officer said.

Police also said that Singh's cell phone was recovered from the spot which had many missed calls from his family. Primary questioning has revealed that Singh was disturbed due to family issues and had been upset for past few days. However, since no suicide note was recovered from the deceased, police are yet to ascertain any reason for which he took the disastrous step.
