The communal clashes that broke out in Uttar Pradesh on Monday and the subsequent death of a cop and a youth, has led to a political warfare. The Congress party has slammed the BJP leadership in both the Centre and the state, claiming that the party's backing to such fringe elements has emboldened them to attack policemen. "While the law and order situation in UP is crumbling, the chief minister of the state is busy in campaigning in other states," Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi said on Tuesday.

Chaturvedi also said that the Congress will launch not only statewide, but nationwide agitation to ensure that free and fair investigation into the death of the UP inspector.

Chaturvedi was in Pune to inaugurate a poster exhibition targeting the BJP, organised by former member of legislative council Mohan Joshi at Balgandharva hall on Tuesday.

Referring to the death of inspector Subodh Kumar in Bulandshahr, she said, "The people who are eager to kill others are finding themselves at a strong position as the ruling party is not only protecting them but also encouraging them. If the officials who have the responsibility of maintaining law and order are under attack, then what will be the situation in the country in the future."

She also slammed the UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath over the incident and said, "The leadership of the state has given free hand to the anti social elements to do whatever they want to do. While on one hand the law and order situation is crumbling in UP, the chief minister is busy in campaigning in other state."

"If he has to show some accountability towards people, he must come back to his state and ensure free and fair investigation into the case. If he is incapable, he should be removed from the post," she said.

When asked what will be the strategy of Congress to pressurise the government for fair investigation, she said, "When Kuldeep Sengar, the sitting BJP MLA came under the investigation for raping a minor and when we found that he was being protected by the government, we built a pressure and made sure that he is arrested. Similarly, in this case also we will constantly build pressure for free and fair investigation. The party will even launch state and nationwide protest to make sure that the investigation reaches to its due conclusion."

Chaturvedi also accused BJP for polarising the country in the name of religion and caste. "BJP's political trajectory since 1980 is on the basis o creating religious divide. Today, unfortunately it has reached to a stage where they are now trying to divide gods over the castes."

"With no development records to show, they feel that the same trajectory will help them in future but people will reject this agenda in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattishargh, Telangana and Mizoram," she said.
