Budget Session of Parliament: Venkaiah Naidu warns Rajya Sabha MPs of 'extreme step'

Appealing for normalcy in the house, vice-president Venkaiah Naidu on Friday asked Rajya Sabha MPs to maintain decorum in the House. He warned that if an end was not brought to the impasse, he will be "compelled" to take an extreme step.

Addressing MPs before the proceedings of the House commenced, Naidu said that several MPs are beginning to get disillusioned and distressed over the two-week-long impasse in the House. Naidu also met finance minister Arun Jaitley, the leader of the house, and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Congress's Ghulam Nabi Azad to work on ending the stalemate.

"If you are insisting on something, you can have your say and at the end of the day we have to go either by consensus or by majority of the House. You can't dictate and say either you go my way or highway and that is no way... I am sorry I can't allow this sort of thing. I once again make an appeal before taking an extreme view of the same.

"You can't decide issues physically or by bringing placards and shouting slogans, please understand. I hope at least next week onward we have constructive debate in the House," said Naidu.

He also said that several members have met him to convey their frustration over the stalling of the proceedings. However, as the House was adjourned for the first time, Naidu met MPs from several parties, including DMK, AIADMK, SP and TDP, and urged them to let the House run smoothly. The MPs said that they will speak to their party leaders.
