The Border Security Force (BSF) on Friday evening said that the army launched an offensive on Friday morning after the Pakistani Rangers violated ceasefire in Hiranagar sector of Kathua district.

BSF issued a statement saying, "In a befitting reply to a sniper attack of Pakistani Rangers at 9:35am on Friday morning in Hiranagar Sector of Jammu, BSF launched an offensive. During intermittent firing of small arms and area weapon one militant and seven Rangers were shot dead. Today in Hiranagar Sector, Pakistani Rangers injured one BSF trooper Constable Gurnam Singh, he was evacuated and his condition is critical."

General Asim Bajwa, DG Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Pakistan, however, rejected BSF's claims of neutralising 7 Pak Rangers. "Indians resorted to unprovoked firing in Shakargarh sector today. Pakistan Rangers befittingly responded. No loss on Pakistan's side. Indian claim of hitting or killing any Pakistan soldier or Ranger with firing at anytime today at LOC or working boundary absolutely false," General Asim Bajwa.

DK Upadhyay, IG BSF Jammu Rangers, said that they had used all sorts of weapons. "If they begin again, we will give them a reply again, they should remember that. We gave a befitting response, that is why they were rattled and fired again today morning," said DK Upadhyay.

"Pakistan started the firing, they got the answer for it too in the same language. It would be better if they don't dare a second time," said DK Upadhyay.

The BSF had earlier said source input received claimed that Pakistan Post is running a news item claiming five Pakistani Rangers' death.

After the BSF foiled an infiltration bid in Hiranagar's Bobiyan in Jammu on Wednesday night, Pak Rangers targeted the same area on Friday morning. Pakistani troops used small arms, automatic weapons and 82 mm mortars bombs to target Indian positions.

With this, the number of ceasefire violations along the IB and the LoC in the state after surgical strikes by the Indian Army in PoK has risen to 31. Indian and Pakistani forces are exchanging fire for past four days in the sector. Pakistani troops have violated ceasefire five times in past four days. Pakistani troops on Thursday had heavily shelled areas in Bhimber Gali sector along the LoC in Rajouri district.
