A massive hunt has been launched to track down and neutralise a five-member terrorist group that has infiltrated from Pakistan into Jammu and Kashmir using an underground tunnel on the International Border (IB) in Jammu division.

"There is a possibility that a group of terrorists may have infiltrated through a tunnel a few days ago... We are trying to locate the tunnel. Their number is five and HSTI recording also shows it's a five-member group. We will track and neutralise them soon," said KK Sharma, Director General (DG) of BSF.

The revelation has come on the day when BSF foiled another Pakistan-abetted infiltration bid on the IB in Manguchack area in the Hiranagar sector of Jammu. A 28-year-old BSF constable, Devender Kumar, was killed when he was hit in his left eye while filing from a loophole of his LMG post.

"Alert troops noticed some suspicious movement on the IB. An illumination bomb was fired at the site and troops opened fire from LMG. They (terrorists) managed to flee. But after some time their movement was noticed again. We again swung into action. This time Pakistan also opened fire and in the cross-border firing constable Devender Singh attained martyrdom," said Sharma.

Terming the infiltration attempts ahead of the PM visit a "serious incident", Sharma said they (security forces) need to remain extra vigilant. "Our sister agencies and J&K police are fully alive to the situation," he said.

The DG BSF noted there is large number of terrorists waiting on the launching pads across to sneak into J&K. "Large number of terrorists is waiting across on the launch pads. Pakistan is trying hard to push them into Indian side," he said.

Sharma said Pakistan is their hostile neighbour which always is in a process to infiltrate terrorists into this side. "Pakistan violates ceasefire. BSF does not start it. When they start, we give befitting reply. This time it is not going to be an exception. Martyrdom of Constable Singh will not go in vain. We will take appropriate action," he said.

Smart fencing

The pilot project of smart fencing is nearing completion and will be inaugurated by Home Minister Rajnath Singh either in first or second week of June. "We have a plan to roll out on Pakistan border. We want to make the borders fool-proof. Technology is a force multiplier. Future of border-guarding lies in technology," said KK Sharma, Director General (DG) of BSF.
