Congress on Monday sought a level playing field to all media organisations in the matter of government breaking news about important announcements regarding its decisions.

"I am not aware of the full details but it seems surprising the way you are telling. Definitely national broadcasters carry importance but all can get information or the news. Everybody should be treated on par," party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters.

He was asked to react to reports on Information and Broadcasting Secretary Bimal Julka writing to all union ministers that only AIR and Doordarshan will be given the breaking news by Union ministries and government departments "in advance of" private TV channels and news agencies.

"Any important announcements regarding government decisions and policy initiatives may be given to News Services Division of AIR/DD News in advance of private news channels and agencies," said Julka in the letter.

"It would be highly appreciated if you could request your minister to give exclusive 10-15 minute interviews each in Hindi and English for current affairs programmes broadcasts and telecasts by NSD: AIR and DD news respectively on the designated days of media interactions," he had said.
