Agra, the city of love, witnessed a unique union when two lesbian girls got married. The same-sex wedding took place on April 16, during a community marriage ceremony.

The two girls had fallen in love when they met in college. One of the girls, dressed in a pant-shirt and sporting a boy cut, had sought her partner’s parents’ permission to get hooked but the parents had refused to give permission to the inter-caste marriage.

Resident of Tedi Bagia in Vikas Nagar and Nagla Kishanlal in Agra, one of the girls belongs to the Dalit community, while the other one is Brahmin.

When the parents arranged their marriages with others, they got annoyed and eloped. They got themselves registered at a mass Dalit community marriage on April 16. They used ‘fake parents’ to solemnize the marriage on the day. After taking the vow, they rented a house and started living together.

However, on Sunday, one of the girl’s parents found out and objected to the union. However, the two refused to be separated and threatened to commit suicide. Startled parents called the cops, who took them to the Mahila Police Station for counselling, but the two insisted they want to either spend their lives together or die.

“We are adults and have every right to live together,” they insisted, creating a ruckus in the police station. The police are now baffled on how to deal with the marriage and situation arising out of it. In India, same-sex marriages aren’t recognised by law.

“We are counselling them and have told them that their marriage was illegal under the law. If they continued to insist then we will have no choice than to register a case and produce them before the family court,” said a police official.
