The long stay of former Maharashtra minister and senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case, in Bombay hospital in Mumbai has raised many eyebrows.

Bhujbal had been lodged in Arthur Road jail in the city since March this year after the ED arrested him in Maharashtra Sadan scam and other cases.  He had checked into the Bombay Hospital on November 2 for a medical test (thallium scan) which takes a few hours but has been in the hospital for the last 34 days.

Soon after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted a surprise check to find out whether Bhujbal was receiving preferential treatment, a blame game began between hospitals and jail authorities to cover-up the matter, reports the Mumbai Mirror.

All the parties involved — the state-run JJ Hospital, the Bombay hospital and the Arthur Road jail — have said that they are not the ones to take a call on Bhujbal's release. Bombay Hospital has said it has sent the reports of the test to the JJ Hospital, the latter must make a decision based on the reports.

Meanwhile, the JJ Hospital is waiting for jail authorities to make a move. "The reports said Mr. Bhujbal needed to undergo an angiography. It is for the jail authorities to decide whether he will undergo the procedure," JJ Hospital dean, Dr TP Lahane said.

The jail authorities are blaming the hospitals for not releasing Bhujbal saying that their hands are tied unless they do so. "It is up to the Bombay Hospital and the JJ Hospital doctors, who are the competent authority, to give an opinion on Bhujbal's health. There is no preferential treatment to anyone from our end. The JJ and Bombay Hospital doctors should coordinate with us in a better manner,"  BK Upadhyay, Additional Directorate General of Police (Prisons) said.

The ED will be sending more officials to the hospital. It has also found that Bhujbal was put up in a "highly luxurious suite" (room number 1360, on the 13th floor). "We have come across a few things during our visits on Friday and Saturday. The court will be informed," an ED source told the Mirror.
