"At around 10 am on Tuesday, body of Madki Saif Ahmed was found floating and was recovered," said commander Rahul Sinha, spokesperson of Indian Navy. Early in the day, Indian Coast Guard and Indian Navy had pressed in their helicopters and boats for the search and rescue operation.

Among the 14 victims are twin sisters, Rafiya Ansari and Shafiya Ansari. The others who drowned are Sumaiya Ansari, Sheefa Kazi, Supriya Pan, Sana Shaikh, Swapnali Salgar, Sajeed Choudhary, Iftekar Shaikh, Samreen Shaikh, Mohammed Ansari, Farin Sayyed and Rajlaxmi Pandugayala.

The incident had occurred at around 3.30 pm, when there was high tide. Students from Pune's Abeda Inamdar College had gone for a day-long picnic in three buses to Murud Beach and Murud Janjira.

According to locals, students were warned against venturing too far into the sea, but their warning went unheeded, thereby resulting in the tragedy.

As per the accounts of some of the students, they had gone to the fort and returned to the beach. Some students had gathered near the buses to have lunch, while a few others ventured into the waters. Some were clicking selfies and taking photographs, when one of the huge waves resulted in students losing balance.

Late on Monday, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced an ex-gratia of Rs2 lakh each to the families of the students.
