February 21 marked the ninth consecutive election since 2002 where Andheri-based civic activist James John opted the None Of The Above (NOTA) option while casting his vote. His reason? None of the candidates fielding for the Municipal elections were worthy of his vote.

"All the candidates fielded by various political parties from my area this time are from the same crop who only surface during the elections and have no qualities to deserve my vote, hence I used the NOTA option this time as well," said John who has been one of the most vociferous supporters of NOTA.

James said he has used the NOTA option in the last three parliamentary elections, three assembly elections, and three Municipal Corporation elections including the one held on Tuesday. "So what if I am frustrated  with the political parties and candidates, why should i stop voting which is my basic right," he said.

"I have been happy for the last two years. All I need to do is press the NOTA button on the EVM. Before the NOTA button was introduced even polling officials used to make people run around," he said.

James is also the coordinator of AGNI for Andheri East area. He said he's hopeful that someday some political party would have a deserving candidate so that his record string of NOTAs could come to an end.
