Hard-pressed to arrest waning support of Dalits before fast approaching 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP began a two-day convention of its Scheduled Caste (SC) Morcha at Nagpur on Saturday.

At the convention, about 5,000 BJP and RSS workers would be briefed about the important steps that have been taken by the Modi government for the "upliftment" of weaker sections, especially Dalits, that were neglected by the previous UPA government.

Addressing the gathering, Union Ministers Thawar Chand Gehlot and Nitin Gadkari spoke about how under PM Narendra Modi, the government did justice to Dr BR Ambedkar's legacy by developing five important places related to his life as national monuments — Panchteertha.

These include a memorial to be built at 26 Alipur Road where Dr Ambedkar spent his last days as 'Mahaparinirvan Sthal', his birthplace in Mhow, the place in London where he stayed while studying in the UK, 'Deeksha Bhoomi' in Nagpur, where he took education and in Delhi, and 'Chaitya Bhoomi' in Mumbai. In addition, the government has built Dr Ambedkar Foundation at 15 Janpath, in Delhi.

Describing PM Modi as the real crusader taking forward the legacy of Dr Ambedkar, Gehlot said, "The BJP under PM Modi is for Dalits and backwards castes. It is only the BJP that can deliver justice to them."

He said it was PM Modi who brought historic changes in the law to stop manual scavenging, make the anti-atrocities act stronger and gave reservation to the poor in general category.

"The decision to celebrate Samvidhan Diwas was taken by the Modi government. Besides, it was Modi government which started schemes like Jan Dhan Yojna, Ujjawala Yojna and Awas Yojna whose major beneficiary are people belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes,"said Gehlot.

Denying reports that he has criticised the party leadership, Gadkari, said, "I ask you to make a resolution to work with full conviction and strength so that in the coming elections we once make Narendra Modi prime minister again for doing justice to backward sections and making India prosperous, progressive and powerful."

Socio-economic equality is the "conviction and ideology" of the BJP, said Gadkari adding, "It is not bad performance but good work that invites more enemies. The people who could not see eye to eye, who have lost (political) ground, have come together."

Gadkari alleged that the Congress succeeded in creating a wrong perception that the BJP was a communal party representing only upper castes and was inimical to Dalit interests.

"There is this theory in politics...either convince or confuse people. When you cannot convince, you start confusing," he said asking workers to dispel the misunderstanding created by Congress that the BJP is anti-Dalit.
