The outcome of the Parliamentary elections may cost Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi his job. Grim exit poll projections for Congress have emboldened a group of rebel Congress MLAs to intensify their demand for his ouster.

Besides, weakened by dissidence, Gogoi had asserted in the run up to the polls that he would resign if his party, the Congress, fails to win less than seven seats. Exit polls give the Congress four to five seats and six to eight seats to the BJP.

“I still stand by what I had asserted ahead of the polls. I will quit if the Congress gets less than seven seats. But I don’t think I have to face that situation as I am confident Congress will win at least eight seats,” Gogoi said.
