The Jat bastion is likely to have a non-Jat chief minister, if BJP emerges victorious in the state. With BJP banking on the non-Jats to consolidate in its favour, the party is considering a chief minister who is a non-Jat, party sources said.

In a state where the BJP has never won on its own, a victory would mean that its strategy of not projecting a chief ministerial candidate in the run up to the elections and going it alone have both passed the test.

The BJP, which had won just four seats in the last assembly polls in the state, was of the view that by not projecting a chief ministerial candidate, it could prevent a Jat and non-Jat polarisation, sources said.

Though the party did put up 17 Jat candidates, it largely depended on the non-jats-- Brahmins, Punjabis, Rajput, Baniya and Dalits mainly comprising Jatavs. These segments were shifting allegiance from the Congress, which has ruled the state for a decade.

The BJP's Jat leaders include Rao Inderjit Singh, who had quit the Congress and joined the saffron party before the Lok Sabha elections, Krishna Pal Gurjar, an MP from Faridabad who is minister of state for transport and highways, Manohar Lal Khattar, a senior leader who is contesting from Karnal, Anil Vij, MLA from Ambala Cantt and Ram Bilas Sharma, the party's state president. Earlier, the name of Captain Abhimanyu, who is contesting from Narnaund assembly seat, was doing the rounds as front-runner for the chief minister's post, after party chief Amit Shah showered praises on him. However, Abhimanyu is a Jat.

Party leaders said the leadership will take a decision after the results on October 19.

Barring Bansi Lal, a former Congress leader who later floated the Haryana Vikas Party, the state has not had a non-Jat chief minister.
