As part of its plan to win over the Scheduled Castes (SC) in the run-up to the 2019 elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will hold a national convention of its SC Morcha on January 19 at Nagpur. The national convention has been named 'Bhim Vijay Sankalp Rashtriya Adhiveshan'.

According to party sources, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will be attending the convention. BJP president Amit Shah, who was scheduled to attend, won't be able to make it to the event as he is down with swine flu, sources said.

According to sources, all BJP ministers from the Scheduled Castes community in both, Central and State governments will attend the event. All SC Morcha office bearers, starting from Panchayat-level to Parliament-level, will join the event, sources said.

On January 20, the party has planned a massive rally, named Bhim Vijay Sankalp Rally. An estimated one lakh people belonging to the SC from across Maharashtra will attend the rally. Themed around Abki Baar Phir Se Modi Sarkar (This time, Modi government again), BJP members from the SC community will take the pledge to bring the Modi government back for another term during the two-day event.

BJP Scheduled Caste Morcha national president Vinod Sonkar said the purpose of this convention is to apprise the community about the work done by the Modi government in the last five years.

Sonkar said the SC Morcha national convention will dispel the "illusion" that the BJP is a party for upper castes.

Sonkar said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ensured economic and social equality in the country dreamt by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. "The people of SC community will have to be informed that the work for social and economic equality since May 26, 2014, the day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the reins of the country," Sonkar said.

He said that toilets may be simply toilets for others, but for the members of the SC community, it is a "matter of social equality."

The BJP SC Morcha president said financial inclusion schemes such as Ujwala Yojana, Mudra Loan scheme, Stand-up India, etc have brought in social equality for the SC Community. He added that the Modi government has protected the rights of the community by bringing an ordinance to reaffirm the SC/ST Act.
