Ahead of the panchayat election in West Bengal in 2019, the state BJP has decided to rake up the issue of triple talaq among members of the minority section.
In the first convention of the state BJP's minority cell, district leaders were told to carry the message to the lowest level of the organisation about the Modi government, which had been working for the empowerment and rights of Muslim women.
Senior state BJP leaders, including party president of the state Dilip Ghosh and state president of the women's wing of the party Locket Chatterjee, were present at the meeting.
State president for the minority cell, Ali Hossain said that along with the message that the Centre was for the welfare of Muslim women in the state, we also need to make people aware how the state government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had implied her support for the custom of triple talaq.
"Not only has she not reacted in appreciation of the Supreme Court ruling which had favoured downtrodden Muslim women, her minister, on her behest, had criticised the Supreme Court ruling and had said that the apex court did not have the right to do so," Hossain said.
It was found out that at the meeting BJP district leaders were told to keep the issue of triple talaq alive and reap as much dividend as they could till the panchayat polls. "At the Mandal level, we will conduct street-corner meetings, organise rallies and meet people at a personal level explaining them about the initiative of the Central Government and the apathy of the state government. We will have to use issues like these to garner as much support from the minority community as possible and it is a positive sign that many of the Muslim community were breaking out of the myth that BJP was an anti-Muslim party," said a source inside the party.
