Alleging that the BJP spent over Rs 6,500 crore during Karnataka elections, the Congress on Monday said there should be an independent high-level inquiry on where the money came from.

"It is a common knowledge that got published in several newspapers in Karnataka that the BJP gave Rs 20 crore to each of its candidates on 222 seats that alone equals to Rs 4,500 crore. In addition, if you calculate the kind of money the BJP spent on advertisements in television channels and newspapers, it will cross Rs 6,500 crore," Congress leader Anand Sharma said.

Countering BJP chief Amit Shah's first presser after Karnataka results in which he accused the Congress and JD(S) of keeping their MLAs in custody as travesty of truth, Sharma said, "We thought he would apologise for the shameful conduct in Karnataka, but it appears that the BJP is squirming because the Supreme Court order did not give them any time to blackmail and poach MLAs."

He said that MLAs were in hotel for fear of something happening to them. "I condemn this. They removed the security of the hotel where the Congress and JD(S) had kept its MLAs to save from poaching. Why was plane allowed to fly? Who was DGCA working for?" Sharma asked.

He accused the Modi government of unleashing all the government agencies to hound Congress and JD(S) MLAs and harassing their families to put pressure on them to switch sides.

Sharma asserted that the mandate was against the BJP and for the Congress-JD(S) combine.

"Amit Shah should look at the EC figures. Congress vote percentage has gone up from 2008 and 2013 elections. If he is talking of mandate then the Congress even got two percentage points more vote share than the BJP," Sharma said.
