The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday lashed out at Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal for casting aspersions on Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, saying it will form the government in Delhi if it is invited.
BJP General Secretary Rajiv Pratap Rudy said Kejriwal, who got an opportunity to run the government in Delhi along with the Congress support, quit after 49 days.
"I can understand that he in a mental state where he wants to get back to the government. He knows fully well that he cannot get back to the government and he is casting aspersions on the Lieutenant Governor. The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi holds a constitutional position," he added.
Rudy said it is a well-known fact that the BJP has the largest number of seats in the Delhi Assembly along with the support of one Akali Dal MLA.
"The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi has given a report to the President of India, who is the highest constitutional authority in this country. I really can't understand why is Mr. Kejriwal so upset and casting aspersions. I think the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi very well understands his constitutional position would take a call and I think as the largest political party, the BJP if it gets the invite should be allowed to form a government," he added.
Kejriwal earlier in the day met President Pranab Mukherjee and urged him to dissolve the Delhi Assembly.
Kejriwal, who met the President along with his colleagues from the Aam Aadmi Party, later told media that allowing the BJP to form the government in Delhi would be equivalent to murder of democracy.
"We have told him that there are only three parties. AAP is not in a position to form the government and it will not support anyone. AAP wants fresh polls and same has been announced by the Congress then how come the BJP can be allowed to form the government," Kejriwal told mediapersons outside the Rashtrapati Bhavan here.
"We have told him that according to media reports it has come to our light that the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi has sent a report to him (President) about the BJP be allowed to form the government in Delhi. If the BJP is allowed to form the government here then it will be a case of murdering democracy and violation of the Constitution. They do not have the numbers. They will only be able to form the government with help of horse-trading," he added.
Continuing his criticism of the BJP, Kejriwal further said: "If the BJP is given an invitation to form the government then the support letters of the MLAs should be asked for."
"As the situation has become uncertain, we have requested the President to dissolve the assembly and have fresh elections in Delhi to clear the uncertainty," he added.
According to reports, Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung had sent a recommendation to the President to invite the BJP, which has the highest numbers in the Delhi Assembly, to form the government in the national capital.
Delhi has been under the President's rule since February 17 this year after Kejriwal resigned as the Chief Minister over the non-introduction of the Jan Lokpal Bill in the assembly.
