Criticising the government both at the Centre and in the state, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena Chief Raj Thackeray said on Wednesday that the failure of the government to show any developmental work in the past four years has forced them to bring up rake up issues like Ram temple and distribution of Bhagavad Gita ahead of elections.

Thackeray was in Pune on Wednesday, where he interacted with the media. He said, "I am also of the opinion that the Ram temple should be built, but it should not be used as an election agenda. If raising such issues to incite communal violence, it will benefit them; in fact, this is what the BJP wants to happen."

"The BJP should have taken up the issue (of Ram Temple) at the beginning only, but they were busy with demonetisation and yoga then. Now, suddenly they remembered the Ram temple issue after four years," he said.

Thackeray also slammed the state government for taking police action against MNS workers for carrying out an agitation against potholes in Mumbai roads. MNS workers had dug up the road in front of the Mantralaya to highlight the pothole menace when some of them were arrested. "Our people were arrested and beaten up with belts. I want to ask the BJP, what if you become the Opposition tomorrow, will you be okay with your workers being treated that way?"

Alleging that the state government is trying to sneak in students from other states to write the state's medical college exams by overlooking the rights of local students in the Thackeray said his party will keep a 'close watch' on such students. "All the other states have safeguarded the interest of students from their respective states by enacting a law in the Assembly on the admission process. However, the Maharashtra government is not only showing reluctance in enacting the law but is also trying to sneak outside students by ignoring those from Maharashtra."
