BJP moved a privilege motion against Congress president Rahul Gandhi for "misleading" the Lok Sabha through his "false allegations" against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government.

If the Lok Sabha Speaker admits the motion, it will go to House's Committee of Privileges that may issue a notice to Gandhi and hold a hearing. If he is found guilty, he may face brief suspension from the House.

BJP MP Pralhad Joshi submitted the motion, demanding action against Gandhi for making "serious, baseless and wild allegations" regarding the Rafale deal. Gandhi said the PM was a "bhagidaar" (collaborator) in cases of alleged corruption, not a "chowkidaar (guard). He also alleged that the PM cheated his own Army in dealing with China on the Doklam issue.

BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi heads the Committee of Privileges.

"His behaviour was childish. He has grown old but it is unfortunate that he has not grown up. It is unfortunate that the president of Congress is so ill-informed and immature," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar told reporters.

The Congress chief, while addressing the Lok Sabha, said the PM favours a small group of industrialists. During the speech, Gandhi consciously positioned himself as PM Modi's opponent-in-chief. In his most aggressive avatar yet, Gandhi broke protocol to needle BJP chief Amit Shah and the RSS and described the four years of Modi's government as a series of "Jumla strikes".

Gandhi accused the PM and the Defence Minister on the Rafale deal, accusing them of lying to the electorate, and hinting at massive graft. The allegations were just short of outrageous and invited a gentle ticking-off from Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.

The attack on the PM was personal, focussing on his alleged acts of omission and commission, the common thread being that he had taken the electorate for a ride.
