As protests against the gang-rape incident here turned violent, BJP on Sunday asked the government to convene an all-party meeting and also pressed for a special session of Parliament to discuss issues relating to the entire gamut of law and order.

BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said she has spoken to Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde to convene an all-party meet to "resolve the current situation" that has arisen after the brutal rape of a 23-year-old paramedical student in a moving bus last Sunday night.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha made an appeal to youths not to resort to violence, saying this is not the solution.

"Please do not resort to violence. That is not the solution. It is our country. This is our problem. We will definitely find a solution," Swaraj said in a statement and also through a tweet on microblogging site Twitter.

"My young friends : We appreciate your feelings. Your anger is genuine. But please give us some time," she posted.

Swaraj also suggested that Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit undertake night patrols of the city and visit police stations.

"When I took over as the Chief Minister of Delhi, the law and order situation was very bad. I promised people 'Main raat ko jagoongi taki Delhi wale chain se so saken'.

I used to patrol the city and Police stations whole night. The newspaper headlines changed. Delhi CM should do precisely this," she said. Swaraj was Delhi Chief Minister between October 13 and December three in 1998.

BJP spokesperson Prakash Javedkar said the protest by the youth is a "wake-up" call and a "warning" to the UPA Government which has "failed miserably" in protecting women.

"We demand a special session of Parliament for discussing the whole gamut of issues concerning law and order," he said as he condemned the police action against the "peaceful protest".

Swaraj had yesterday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to convene a special session of Parliament for amending the existing law to provide death sentence for heinous crimes against women.
