Congress leader Manish Tewari on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to tell the nation whether separatist leader Masarat Alam is a terrorist or a political prisoner and alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is playing a dangerous game.

"In the case of Masarat Alam, the Prime Minister must tell the nation that is Masarat Alam a terrorist or is Masarat Alam a political prisoner and if he is a political prisoner then what is the difference between us and Pakistan," said Tewari. "So, therefore, the BJP is playing a very dangerous game. It is hunting with the PDP in Srinagar, it is trying to run with the hare in Jammu and it goes completely underground in Delhi," he added.

Taking a jibe at the alliance government in Jammu and Kashmir, the Congress leader said the 'nikaah' between the BJP and the PDP was done without possibly finalising the sum of 'meher'. "It was only sanctified on the cusp of loaves and fishes of power. So, in such a 'nikaah' divorce is inevitable but before the divorce takes place it should not be that such harm is done to national security that it would be difficult to retrieve the situation," he added.

Earlier, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned till noon on Monday, following an uproar in the Upper House over the recent release of separatist leader Masarat Alam. Opposition leaders and members sought an explanation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue, chanting 'Pradhan Mantri, jawab do!' Similar disruptive scenes are being witnessed in the Lok Sabha as well, with Speaker Sumitra Mahajan repeatedly remonstrating with the opposition to hold off on their protests and await a reply from the treasury benches.
The Union Home Ministry had earlier sought a report from the Jammu and Kashmir Government on circumstances leading to the release of separatist leader.

Alam was released from Baramulla prison following the new Jammu and Kashmir government's policy to free political prisoners who do not face criminal charges.  Alam is the chairman of Muslim League, a constituent of hard-line Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani and is widely seen as the latter's successor. He had been convicted for organising anti-India protests resulting in the death of 112 people in stone pelting across the Valley in 2010. Masarat's release has drawn a lot of criticism from several political parties.
