The BJP will adopt the same poll strategy in Lok Sabha elections that helped it retain power in Madhya Pradesh (MP) last year.

Highly-placed sources told DNA that South Indian psephologist GVL Narasimha Rao, who is credited with bringing the BJP back in power for a second term in MP, has been assigned the task of formulating party strategy for parliamentary elections.

The sources said Rao, who is media adviser to chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, made a detailed presentation on the 10-point strategy at the Nagpur conclave of the BJP three days ago. They said following LK Advani’s praise, the strategy could be implemented, with some changes, at the national level.

The proposed strategy recommends a positive election campaign with promises that can be carried out, instead of mere criticism of the opposition. In MP, the BJP had concentrated on highlighting Chauhan’s achievements rather than opposition Congress’ alleged misdeeds.

Rao argued in Nagpur that the Barack Obama US presidential campaign promised and generated hope, which was liked by the electorate.

The proposed strategy includes weaving state and national issues, highlighting positive governance agenda, wooing the youth with the promise of good governance and using popular leaders in campaigns.

Rao had made detailed pre-poll surveys for MP and before that, for Gujarat and prepared a strategy around which poll campaigns in the states were woven. In both states, the BJP came back to power.

After the success, Chauhan made him his adviser with a ministerial status and party president Rajnath Singh inducted him into the BJP’s national executive.

Speaking over phone from Nagpur, Rao confirmed that his presentation was appreciated by top BJP leaders, such as Advani and Rajnath. More discussions with different leaders will take place soon, he said.
